一、引言：什么是翻译？什么是传神翻译？

翻译就是把一种语言的意思用另一种语言准确地表达出来。翻译涉及两个过程，一是对原文的透彻理解，二是对原文的准确再现。要想做好英汉翻译，前者要求译者有深厚的英语功底，后者要求译者有深厚的汉语功底。就文学翻译来说，它是一种艺术的再现，或者说是一种受约束的艺术创作。笔者认为，文学翻译的最高境界是“传神”。所谓“传神”，就是把原文的意思表达得非常准确，意境展现得非常逼真、鲜活，让人读后产生一种拍案叫绝的冲动。

二、英汉传神翻译欣赏（5）

将下面的句子传神地翻译成汉语：

In the context of the year's most popular books, my wife felt she had signed on for Love Story, but had ended up with 100 Years of Solitude.

相关段落和背景信息

宇航员忙着训练，一周5天不回家，妻子于是产生了抱怨。下文中的Tracy是作者的女儿，Barbara是他的妻子。

We were gone from home Monday through Friday, and I missed much of the excitement when Tracy went into the second grade, started in the Brownies and studied for her catechism. Barbara wistfully pointed out that the regimen of the never-ending training grind was growing stale the third time around. In the context of the year's most popular books, my wife felt she had signed on for Love Story, but had ended up with 100 Years of Solitude.

难点分析和翻译技巧：

这里的难点有两个：一是要理解短语“sign on”和“end up”的意思；二是要熟习两本著名的英文小说——《爱情故事》和《百年孤独》。

Sign on: to engage oneself by or as if by a signature（签约做某事）;

End up: to come to a particular end or condition（得到或产生某种结果）。

试译：想到当年给出的最受欢迎图书榜，我妻子觉得她签约的是《爱情故事》，得到的却是《百年孤独》。

三、英汉传神翻译训练（6）

将下面的句子传神地翻译成汉语：

We were kidding before

But not anymore

Get yourselves into space

Or we'll take your place.

作者和他的指令长要乘坐“双子星座”9号飞船进入太空，结果第一次发射时，飞船需要在太空进行对接的目标火箭在升空过程中爆炸了，于是，飞船的发射被迫取消，两位宇航员只得爬出飞船，乘电梯回到地面。飞船第二次发射时，发射计算机出现故障，发射再次取消。以下段落讲的是飞船的第三次发射（Jim和Buzz是他们的后备乘组）。

Some smartass had hung a sign on the door of the gantry elevator. "Tom and Gene: Notice the down capability for this elevator has been removed. Let's have a good flight." It was signed by the spacecraft crew. Big grins all around. It was good that we couldn't talk to anybody, and the humor that day was definitely grim.

Jim and Buzz had been at work for about three hours checking every switch in the spacecraft, and declared it ready. They got a shot in, too, and when we reached the White Room, there was a sign over our hatches:
